“And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine. . .” Isaiah 5:2
Growing up in Texas the following scenario was seen and even participated in a number of times. “Ready?” “Ready” is the reply. A short span of time later and the gate to the chute is opened and out goes a cowboy rider on the back of a bull weighing more than a ton. When the bull wins the battle and flips the cowboy off into the dirt just mere seconds later, the cowboy jumps up and instinctively runs for the fence. For a second he wishes it was not there, so he could easily be free, but a second later as he vaults the fence and the raging bull crashes into it, he is so thankful for it that he leans over and even gives it a little kiss. Why does he love the fence? Because the fence is not there to restrain the rider, it is there to restrain the bull.
The fence is not there to restrain the rider, it is there to restrain the bull...
In this verse, we see that God does the same for us as Christians. He puts a restraint between us and what will destroy us. He fenced up the Vineyard; not to keep the vines from any freedom to grow, but to keep the “foxes” (Song of Solomon 2:15) out that would destroy the vines. How do you view the fences that God has placed in your life? Do you see them as restrictive and hard? Do you see them as unkind and unfair? Or, do you see them as the loving, protective hand of your Heavenly Father keeping out all that would destroy you and your ability to be fruitful, successful, and prosperous?
Make a list of the fences around your life and take a moment today to be thankful.
They are from God and they say “I love you, I want the best for you, I have the best prepared for you.”
