Have you ever taken a day off? Maybe you have been on a rigorous workout plan and you are ready to just take a day off? Maybe you have a job during the week and Saturday and Sunday are your days off of work? Maybe you have a big project you are working on and you decide to just take a day off to let your mind rest? Maybe your sports team has been practicing hard all week and your coach says, "tomorrow you get the day off"? Maybe you are on spring break and you have five days off of school??

Everyone loves a good day off!

Does God take days off? Interesting question. In the creation week, the trinity did take the seventh day to rest (Genesis 2:2-3). God did command the Israelites to rest on the Sabbath (Exodus 20:8). God did command the Israelites to let the land rest on the seventh year (Leviticus 25).

While God did take a rest on the seventh day, and He did command the Israelites to take a rest...

...As a protector, God does not take days off:

Psalm 121:4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

...As a giver of goodness and mercy, God does not take days off:

Psalm 23:6a Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life...

I can just imagine what David is thinking as He writes Psalm 23, maybe out in the pasture. There would be a time when David would put the sheep in the pen. There would be a time when David would go back to his house, enter his room (out of the eye sight of the sheep) and rest his eyes. There would be times when David would be working with his sheep and he would get frustrated with his sheep and maybe lack goodness or mercy towards them. God however, would never have a day where He would leave David out of sight. There would never be a day when He ran out of goodness or mercy.

I can just imagine what Israel was thinking when Psalm 121 was written. There would be a time that all of Israel would lay their head down to rest. Their fears and their problems would follow them to bed, but God was still awake. He was still watching over them.

Praise the Lord that while we may take days off, God never does.

Do you realize that even when you close your eyes and sleep, God is still watching over you? Protecting you?

Do you realize that even though you fail the Lord and sin, He is faithful to forgive and His goodness and His mercy continues to follow your ALL YOUR DAYS?

Wether you are taking the day off from a workout, a job, or school, take some time to run to your God, the One who never takes the day off!
