Wisdom of Words Held

By Pastor Starr

Do you know what makes a volcano erupt? Volcanoes erupt when molten rock (called magma) rises to the top of the surface. Magma on the surface tends to become thick, and when that happens the gas cannot escape, which causes pressure to build up. Pressure then causes the magma to rise and effectually the pressure of the situation causes a dangerous and destructive explosion.

Proverbs 29:11 A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.

Have you ever been in a volcano like situation? Someone does something or says something to you that really just makes you upset? We have a phrase that normally follows that experience, "I am going to give them a piece of my mind."

But is this the most wise approach? Proverbs reminds us that a "fool" will speak whatever is on his/her mind when their spirit is angered. But the contrast to this is the "wise" person. The wise person, although harmed through action or words, will keep back the explosion until afterwards.

The fool explodes all words on their mind, while the wise keeps it back, cools down and handles the situation in a godly fashion.

Do you find yourself like a volcano in those types of situations? Do you explode when the pressure is hot and you are hurt? Next time a situation arises like magma in your life, remember the wisdom of words held back and respond in the right spirit. Ask the Lord for wisdom and come back later to address the situation.
