Step Aside

By Pastor Starr

Have you ever watched superhero vs. villain movie? At some point in the movie there comes a time for the superhero vs. the villain to face off. The moments leading up to the dramatic match may include a gathering of people that are huddled together wondering if they are going to escape the present situation. As this gathering is taking place, the hero emerges from the back of the group and tells the people: step aside, I've got this.

I was reading through some verses in Matthew and I came across Matthew 9:24. This verse in right in the middle of two miracles that Christ performed: 1. the woman with a blood condition and 2. the healing of Jarius' daughter.

As Christ enters the house of the second miracle, He comes upon a scene of a twelve year old girl lying lifeless on a bed. Around the bed are a group of people playing solemn songs on various instruments while others are gathered around mourning the loss.

As Jesus enters the house, He says this to the people there: Mt. 9:24a Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth...

Then came the response of the people Mt. 9:24b ...and they laughed Him to scorn.

The words that caused me to stop and focus on Mt. 9:24 were the words, "give place." Christ comes upon this scene and notices the unbelief by a few things the crowd in that room did:

  1. They accepted the result of death of this twelve year old girl, even though Christ was on the way.

  2. They did not run up to Christ and ask Him to intervene when He walked in.

  3. They laughed at His power.

As He walks into the room, the only thing between Him showing His power in an impossible situation was a group of people in unbelief. Coming into this scene, Christ says, Step aside, I've got this. I wonder if there is something going on in your life right now that seems to be an impossible situation. Maybe you have accepted the fate. Maybe in your mind and heart there is no way that God can intervene now. Maybe at the thought of God doing something now you laugh inside and say, "It's too late now God." Yet Christ is at the door of your heart looking in to a crowded room of unbelief, waiting for you to step aside, run to Him and watch Him work.
